Studying with Music

Millions of students listen to music while studying, yet scientists still disagree about whether background music helps or hinders learning. Our research aims to understand this everyday behaviour by combining evidence synthesis, real-world observation, and experimental research. Together, these studies examine not only whether music affects cognitive performance, but also why people choose to study with music and how music may help sustain effort during prolonged cognitive work.

Why This Research Matters

Background music is one of the most common strategies students use while studying. However, previous research has produced conflicting findings:

Understanding this relationship is important for:

Background Music and Cognitive Task Performance: A Systematic Review of Task, Music and Population Impact

Research Question

Does background music improve or impair cognitive performance?

What We Did

We systematically reviewed decades of research examining the effects of background music on cognitive performance across multiple cognitive domains.

Key Findings

  • No universal effect of background music exists.
  • Outcomes depend on: the task, the music and the characteristics of the listener.
  • Music with lyrics tends to be more disruptive than instrumental music.
  • Difficult cognitive tasks are more susceptible to interference.

Why It Matters

This review demonstrated that the simple question "Does music help studying?" cannot be answered with a simple yes or no. Instead, effects emerge from complex interactions between person, task, and music characteristics. This finding motivated the next stage of our work.

Help Me Study! Music Listening Habits While Studying

Published: 2025

Research Question

If laboratory evidence is mixed, how do students actually use music while studying?

What We Did

We combined survey methods, experience sampling methods and analysis of music listening behaviour to understand real-world studying habits.

Key Findings

Students appear to be strategic music listeners. They tend to select music that supports studying goals rather than simply choosing favourites. Common reasons for music use include:

  • concentration / managing distractions
  • motivation
  • mood regulation
  • creating a productive study environment

Music choices also vary according to perceived task demands.

Why It Matters

Previous research largely focused on short laboratory tasks. This study moved the field into real-world contexts and showed that students use music as part of a broader self-regulation strategy during studying.
